BSC Young Boys midfielder Fabian Rieder has become the single most valuable player in the Swiss Super League, following the latest market value update of the division by Transfermarkt. Hot on the heels of his latest call up to the Swiss national team for the coming World Cup, the 20-year-old youngster looks set to hit new heights, while high-flying talents such as Becir OmeragicLeonidas Stergiou and Ignacio Aliseda have all been downgraded for one reason or another.

Indeed, Rieder has gone from strength to strength at Young Boys and is jointly responsible for the capital club’s new-found confidence. The aforementioned national team call up is just the latest confirmation of the midfielder’s impressive rise, as his market value increases by €2 million to €10m. Which puts Rieder above former league leader and team mate Kastriot Imeri

Another player that has had to make way for Rieder is Omeragic, who has seen his market value depreciate by €2m down to €6m following a start to the season that has largely been dogged by several minor injuries. As such the Zurich star has struggled for game time, while his club’s overall squad market value has dropped massively by €7.6m to just €25.2m.

Summer signings: Balotelli and Aliseda among market value losers

Omeragic's U21 partner Stergiou also had some problems maintaining his place at St. Gallen and as such the market value of the 20-year-old has fallen by €1.5m to €4.5m. Lugano winger Aliseda has had even more misfortune: the 22-year-old Argentinian has seen his value drop by a huge €2.2m to just €1.3m. Aliseda arrived from Chicago Fire in January for €3.5m and since then has hardly kicked a ball in Switzerland due to an injury.

FC Sion’s Mario Balotelli, arguably the most prominent Super League signing of the summer, has also seen his market value downgraded from €2.8m to €2m. “Balotelli simply does not show good performances in the Super League,” David Isler, Transfermarkt’s area manager in Switzerland, said. “In addition to a few good passes, he mainly stands out for complaining, showing his lack of interest on the pitch, not putting in the work defensively and provoking others, like when he raised his middle finger to the Basel fans. Due to his advanced age of 32, we have devalued him accordingly.”

Alongside Rieder, the other big winner from the update was Basel midfielder Wouter Burger, who has seen his market value increase by €1.7m to €3m and is knocking on the door of the league’s top 10 most valuable players. The 21-year-old Dutch talent has proven to be an integral part of Alex Frei’s team and has often been afforded the honour of captaining the side. A player to surely keep one’s eyes on in the future.

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
