Saints winger Redmond joins Alli at Besiktas - Among most valuable Süper Lig signings ever
This article first appeared on September 6, and has since been updated with new information.
Besiktas have confirmed the signing of Nathan Redmond from Southampton on Turkish Deadline day. The former England international will join the Süper Lig club on a permanent deal. Previously, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray had also made offers for the 28-year-old. In Istanbul, Redmond teams up with fellow countryman Dele Alli as one of the most valuable English players abroad, with a market value of €18 million.
Redmond, who joined Southampton for €13.5 million from Norwich in 2016, was an important player for Saints over the years before losing his regular spot under head coach Ralph Hasenhüttl. In the current season, the left winger made a brief appearance against Tottenham on the first matchday, but did not make the squad after that. According to reports, Bournemouth, Wolves and Everton had been interested in him before Deadline Day in England.
Alli is one of ten new signings at Besiktas, who spent €17.6 million on five players so far. The rest arrived on loan or joined the Turkish giants for free. Across the league, Trabzonspor, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce spent even more than Besiktas so far. Redmond becomes one of the most valuable additions in Süper Lig history: only five players were valued higher when they moved to Turkiye. Because his Saints contract expired at the end of the season, Southampton will reportedly only receive a nominal transfer fee for him.
