Real Madrid 1st, Man United 5th - top 20 clubs' total revenue exceeds €10 billion
Real Madrid have replaced Manchester City as the highest revenue generating football club in the world for the 2022/23 season. Despite winning a historic treble, City have been eclipsed by the Spanish giants for the first time since the 2017/18 campaign with Madrid strengthened by a higher stadium attendance after the pandemic and merchandise sales.
Top 20 clubs with highest revenue in 2022/23
The total turnover of the top 20 clubs in European football has exceeded the €10 billion threshold for the first time in history as reported in the 27th edition of Deloitte’s “Football Money League” report, which was published on Thursday. Accordingly, total revenue in the 2022/23 season rose by 14 percent compared to the previous season (€9.2b) to €10.5b. Income for player sales were not included in the figures but they still eclipsed the previous record of €9.3b from the 2018/19 season. The reasons for the significant increases in sales were the increases in match day revenue and commercial income, both of which reached records.
“Clubs have been able to return to full capacity in their stadiums and we have seen great demand from fans. There were also record matchday revenues in the Bundesliga,” said Stefan Ludwig, head of Deloitte’s German sports business group.“The desire to experience football live is currently at an all-time high. Many clubs are trying to offer fans even more additional experiences in order to promote further growth."
Six English Premier League clubs in top 10 highest revenues
Unsurprisingly, six English clubs feature in the top 10 list, while Newcastle United and West Ham United make the top 20. Despite not featuring in last season’s Champions League, Manchester United rank 5th with their revenue standing at €745.8m. Liverpool rank 7th, while Tottenham (8th) and Chelsea (9th) generated more revenue than their London rivals Arsenal (10th). PSG and Barcelona both feature in the top five while Bayern Munich are closing the gap on Man United. Six more English clubs - Aston Villa, Brighton, Fulham, Leeds United, Crystal Palace and Everton - are ranked between 21st and 30th on the list.
