The severe ACL and meniscus injury Neymar suffered on duty with the Brazilian national team will be not only expensive for his club, Al-Hilal, but also for FIFA. Because the Brazilian suffered the injury while playing a competitive fixture with the national team, FIFA will have to compensate his club. Considering the astronomical wages of the player, that compensation will, however, hardly be enough to cover a month’s worth of Neymar’s salary.

FIFA rules stipulate that a club will be compensated should a player suffer an injury that lasts longer than 28 consecutive days. In that case, the FIFA programme compensates football clubs for up to a maximum of €7.5 million per football player per accident. According to FIFA, the €7.5m is calculated at a daily “pro rata” compensation of up to €20,548 (1/365), which is payable for a maximum of 365 days. The maximum daily compensation is limited to €20,548 per accident.

But according to Forbes, Neymar is currently the third highest-paid player in the world, with a yearly salary of €100m. Of those €100m, €75m are paid in salary by his Saudi Pro League club. In other words, the €7.5m paid out by FIFA to compensate for Neymar’s salary will barely last for two months.
