Taylor ended his professional football career to become an opera singer. After using his wages to pay for studies at the Royal Academy of Music he worked in the UK, Australia, Italy and the Netherlands. In 1974, he became Professor of Singing at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music in Glasgow, a role he kept for 18 years.
