Highest attendances in 2023: Man Utd lose top spot, Arsenal knocked out of top 10

The most attended football stadium in the world in 2023 was none other than the Camp Nou, where 83,273 spectators attended on average each Barcelona home league game. The top 16 places on the list unsurprisingly go to European clubs, three of which come from Germany and no less than three come from London specifically. The highest ranked club outside of Europe was Flamengo, who sat 17th with an average attendance of 56,689 fans in 2023.

The previous year saw contenders from across the globe, with Atlanta United representing North America with an average of 47,526 fans per home game, placing them 30th on the list. Similarly, Chinese club Beijing Guoan are the top Asian representative following a year that saw them average 43,769 fans per home game. However, the country with the most clubs is none other than Germany, which had 12 clubs across its two top divisions featured in the top 55 clubs of 2023 by average attendances. Second highest on the list was England (eleven clubs), Spain (seven), and Italy (six). In total no less than 14 countries were represented in 2023’s list.

Although Spain had seven stadiums represented on the list, they belonged to only six clubs. This is because Barcelona only spent half of the year playing in their famed arena, and the other half playing in the Olympic Stadium while the Camp Nou was renovated. Due to the Spanish club’s remarkable support, their home away from home also features on the list after averaging 40,737 spectators per home game. In total, 46 stadiums across the world enjoyed an average home crowd of 40,000 fans or more.
